George Sherwood
20th - 21st Centuries Metal Worker
American, b. 1954
Sculptor George Sherwood was born in 1954 in Fairfield, Connecticut. His interest in the art world began during the 1970s, when he found himself drawn to the theater. He began to develop performances utilizing large, animated props, sculptures, and masks manipulated by the human body. Sherwood completed a bachelor in fine arts degree in 1976 at the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, Connecticut. He went on to complete a bachelor of science degree in engineering at the University of Vermont in 1984. Sherwood then turned his focus to concept development for the toy industry and worked for LEGO for nine years. During this time he was introduced to the kinetic sculpture of George Rickey, a pioneer in the field. This sparked his own passion and led him to pursue his art as a full-time career.

Sherwood’s work is featured in the permanent collections of the Currier Museum of Art, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, and the Contemporary Sculpture Path at Forest Hill Educational Trust. In 2007 he was awarded the Lillian Heller Award for Contemporary Art at Chesterwood in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.
