Walker T. Weed
20th - 21st Centuries Furniture Maker
American, (1918–2014)
Furniture maker Walker T. Weed was born in 1918 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. Self-taught in his craft, Weed credited his grandmother, an antique-furniture expert and enthusiast, for getting him started in woodworking. At the age of twelve he had his own woodshop, where he produced a line of coffee tables priced at five dollars. He received all his formal training in cabinetmaking in grade-school shop classes in Montclair, New Jersey. After high school Weed began his studies at Dartmouth College, majoring in modern English literature. However, World War II intervened and upon his return from his service in the army, he chose to pursue cabinetmaking.

In 1948 Weed opened the Gillford Workshop in New Hampshire, working with Gary Allen and Gus Pitout until 1951. Later he maintained the shop as his own until 1965. In 1962 he began teaching at Dartmouth College, and in 1964 he became the director of the crafts program at the college’s Hopkins Center, a position he held until his retirement in 1981.

In 1949 Weed joined the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and became very active in the organization, serving on its board through the 1950s. In 2011 the league honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
