Modern Art

The Currier's Modern Art collection includes paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs by key figures at the center of avant-garde circles in Europe and America at the beginning of the twentieth century. Works by prominent European artists like Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Rouault illustrate how these artists challenged previous conceptions of art with their radical manipulation of form, color, and space. American artists sought a similarly modern means of expression, yet one that captured the spirit and vitality of their environment and culture. The museum's holdings display the groundbreaking innovations of Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Charles Sheeler, among others.
